Cannot Copy Text from Web Page?

What Do You Do When You Cannot Copy Text from the Web Page?

How do I copy and paste a web page? Many websites are starting to make it more difficult to copy text from web page articles. This is somewhat understandable as there are those who will copy and paste content that doesn’t belong to them for personal gain. However, many people may just find the material, article or story interesting. Copying text from a web page doesn’t necessarily indicate bad intent. How to copy protected web page text? There is an assortment of ways that can be used to copy content from a web page that has been protected.

Copy Text from Web Page by Using the Java Method

Javascript is a computer language that many are using to protect their web pages from being copied. Using Java, the right click function that many uses to copy and paste text is disabled. The CTRL + A method can also be blocked. Frustrating if you don’t know what to do but relatively easy if you do. Disabling JavaScript in your browser returns your ability to copy and paste. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox all make it relatively easy. In Google Chrome go to the wrench icon and from the drop-down menu select tools. In tools select Java console. In the Java console click disable JavaScript. Internet Explorer and Firefox are slightly different but just as easy. When you have copied and pasted what you need, don’t forget to enable JavaScript again.

Use Source Code to Copy Text from Web Page Protected Articles

Another means of copying text from a protected site is by going to the source code. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox also make this very easy. In Chrome again go to the wrench icon and select tools. In the tools menu click on view source. IE and Firefox have essentially the same set-up. Once viewing the source code look for the <body> </body> tags. The majority of the web page information will be between these tags. Copy and paste to word. It will probably need some cleaning up but shouldn’t be difficult.

Copy Text from Web Page to PDF Format

The Google Chrome browser provides a built-in option to download complete web pages as a PDF file and it works quite well on protected pages. Click on the wrench icon and select the print option. This will take you to the print console. On the left side of the console near the top are a section labeled “destination”. It should be followed by the words “Save as PDF”. If it isn’t, click the change button and select “Save as PDF”. Just above this is a save button. Click it and you are done and have saved the complete web page as a PDF file.
